Louis mentioned this place a few days ago and I picked up on his description of a massive pork chop I arranged to meet up with him on Saturday at Knockum Hill. The outside of the building is very inviting.


When we got inside, the menu was brief, to the point and very inexpensive. Note the $0.75 anything you want to drink. What catches your eye is that their pork chop is priced higher than the ribs.



I had already been tipped as to the chop. I made an entire day trip for this chop. I was not disappointed. I have had many one pound pork chops in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa, but this behemoth is in a category by itself, unless you've been to the Big Texan, in Amarillo, and ordered (or seen) the 72 oz. monster.



It was cooked perfectly. There was a half-inch smoke ring, but not the least sign of drying out, which I totally expected. I'll remember this plate for a long long time.

Now for the downside. The sides were not up to par. The baked beans, I believe, came out of a can, without much imagination devoted to them afterwards. Louis liked the burgoo, but it had so many lima beans, I couldn't taste anything else.
I sampled the pulled pork, but wasn't impressed. The sauce was OK, but not inspired. Fortunately, I had a bottle of Trolinger's bbq sauce in my saddlebags, that saved the sandwich.
All in all, it's a great place, but a one trick pony.

Pete, A few miles below Hopkinsville, there is a place called Knockum Hill Bar B Que. It's address is: 11185 Highway 107 South, Herndon, Kentucky 42236; Phone: (270) 271-2957.
They have WEIRD hours. Try this:
Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
That's it!

When I arrived, I drove into the driveway of some guy's house. Off to the side of his home is his barbecue restaurant, which has a handful of tables inside. Behind his restaurant is a very large pavillion with maybe 40 picnic tables for large gatherings.
Knockum Hill does a large take out business. I realized why later. The food is good, but their portions are humongous.

I was told to order the BBQ pork chop, which I did. When they brought it to my table, although I was told it would be large, I was still unprepared for how large it was. The pork chop had to be at least 4 inches thick and 6 inches wide. I wish I had a tape measure, but I know I'm very close in my calculations.

The taste? Well, it's mild. It reminds me of Tennessee barbecue, which is generally milder than what I am used to in the northwest corner of Kentucky. It needed a little sauce, but only a touch. (And it was good sauce, I might add. Thin, but very tasty.)

But the pork chop's most enduring quality was how juicy it was. In my experience, a pork chop is usually kind of dry. This had to be the juiciest pork chop I ever put in my mouth. Butter tender. Very flavorful. Juice drizzling down my chin. I could only eat a third of it. It was just too large to eat in one sitting.

I got a barbecue pork sandwich to go, which I ate the next day. If anything, that sandwich had more flavor than the pork chop.

Apparently, the restaurant is a sort of glorified hobby for the guy who runs the place. Something for him to do on weekends. But boy, what a hobby, and well done!

ADD from Al--Knockum Hill (Herndon) is a few miles off I-24 at Exit 86 (US 41A) North side of Fort Campbell.

I can visualize a gathering like the one last February, with about 50 Hungry Roadfooders all ordering the 'Pork Chop Sandwich'. If we were to start a rumor about this activity it might have a direct impact on the current price of "Hog Futures" on the Chicago Commodity Market!

Al, maybe we ought to organize a future gathering in order to test that theory out.

By the way, what Poverty Pete said above about my liking their burgoo is true--up to a point. I was pouring on nearly every mouthful of it the Trolinger's barbecue sauce that he had brought with him. With that wonderful sauce on it, the burgoo was--of course!--very good! By itself it was decent but average. I think Pete got far more lima beans than I did in his burgoo. My portion didn't seem to have that many limas in it. Funny how a turn of the spoon the wrong way can cause differing perceptions. Pete made a fan out of me with that barbecue sauce, though. I ordered some for myself after our meeting. I could douse that stuff on all sorts of things that have nothing to do with barbecue! That evening I had some better burgoo at George's BBQ in Owensboro. For me, that's burgoo's gold standard.

How did you order the sauce? I ran out of mine about 3 months ago and have really missed it. I always use it when I smoke a shoulder.

If you google Trolinger's in Paris Tn., you'll find their web page. Their sauce is like Arthur Bryant's, but I think even better.

We would have to have a gathering when the weather is warm. Pete's right. The building couldn't accommodate one of our Roadfood gatherings. We'd have to use the pavillion out back. I think everyone would enjoy it. I'm going to get down there again soon, before the weather gets cold. I'd be interested to hear what those who have made the pilgrimage there thought of it.

Which BBQ joint? Bradley's..just..ok...some times you can taste starter on the meat Or Uncle Johns...tried their take out meat was ok...sides were barely sides.
I like mine best....

I dined at Knockum Hill Bar B-Q in Herndon, Kentucky today. It was the first time I had been down there since Poverty Pete and I ate there last summer. It's a good 100-mile drive for me.

I tried their ribs today; they were fair. The enormous pork chop is still the star attraction at this place. Their pork chop is now $10.50--up $1.00 from a year ago. It's still a steal. You'd have to pay $30 or more in any other place for the amount of food they give you. (And that rib was as huge as the pork chop, but easier to consume.)

The owners said they had resisted raising the price of the pork chop for years, but they finally gave in to rising meat prices. They may have to raise the price of some of their other items eventually. Still, for the enormous portions that diners receive, the prices border on the ridiculous. They'll get no complaints from me.

If you missed visiting this place last year, put it on your list for new places to visit this year. You won't be sorry.

Louis, it's interesting that you went there today. Just this evening I was pondering taking a ride there tomorrow with a friend or two, but not sure whether it would be open. Did you happen to notice Sunday hours?
The price increase in the pork chop is immaterial. If they charged $15, I wouldn't care. This chop is big enough to be lunch for two, plus one or two small children.

Never mind. I reread the original posts. Guess I'll try for next Saturday.

Pete, I guess you'll have to try for next Saturday. Just get there early. Remember what happened to us when we went there: the place closed at 1:15 in the afternoon because the diners had eaten all their wares. I got there at noon and it was deserted, but by 12:30 it was beginning to fill up.

Made my first trip to Knockumhill BBQ (even though it's only an hours drive,50 miles,from my home)this past Friday. The "porkchop" (in actuality, a 3 lb., 4-rib bone, 5 inch, pork rib-roast)was all it had been touted here at Roadfood, and more! When I picked-up my lunch at the counter, and see this monstrosity sitting on a paper plate with a plastic fork & knife, I'm dubious as to how I'm going to cut the thing. Well, no need to worry! It was absoulutely "pull-apart" tender, moist & juicy, beyond all expectations. Great smoky flavor and my wife & I split the thing & had about a half lb. of meat left over. We are NOT lightweights & have healthy appetites (maybe not HEALTHY appetites, but large appetites). I know Patti's at Grand Rivers, Ky., has a reputation for their porkchops but they aren't in the same league as the one served here at Knockemhill. Got another one "to go" for a friend & he was as impressed as I was. Brought home 2 lbs. of their pulled-pork and we thought it was VERY good also. The sauce they baste & cook with, is a lard based vinegar, lemon juice, salt & seasonings concoction which I think is better than the standard red, ketchup based sauce. Been living in the South for all 62 yrs. of my life, eaten at about every BBQ restaurant I could find, and this particular place is outstanding. The owners were very friendly & cordial. If you get the chance to visit Knockumhill, try the porkchop($10.75) & I think (and hope) you will be as pleased & amazed as we were with it. OUTSTANDING!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! As soon as it gets a little warmer, I'm going to have to get down there again. When I was last there one day around noon last June, I ate 3/4 of the chop (my record so far). Maybe I would have eaten the whole thing if I hadn't eaten at Charlie's Steak House (a handful of miles away) the evening before.

I'm afraid that I have bad news. While Googling restaurants for an upcoming roadtrip to western Kentucky, I discovered that Knockum Hill BBQ burned to the ground on Feb. 25th of this year. As far as I can tell, the place hasn't been rebuilt and there are apparently no plans to do so.

This place is over 100 miles from me, so maybe why that's why I hadn't heard anything about it.  I was surprised when Carolina Bob told me about it.

I'm going to ask and see if there is any chance of that luscious giant pork chop being resurrected somewhere else.  That thing was easily worth a 100 mile drive.

Louis, I'm glad that you did more research than I did, and it's nice to know that Mr. Hill intends to rebuild. I was looking forward to sampling that porcine colossus next month, but it looks like I'm just going to have to be patient for a while.

What a shame to hear about the fire, but I am relieved to see that they are going to rebuild.  Louis took Ceci and I to Knockum Hill last year.  The food and atmosphere lived up to everything we had heard.

I emailed my dinner detective friend near Hopkinsville, Kentucky this morning,
and this is what he said about Knockum Hill:

Yes, the place was completely destroyed by a fire, but I think they are
starting to rebuild. There was an article in the newspaper a couple
weeks ago. I'll let you know more progress when I can find out. Many
of us anxiously await their reopening.

Knockum Hill BBQ is, I'm very happy to say, alive and well. Louis took me there back in June, and the amazing colossal porkchop that made the place famous definitely lives up to its lofty reputation.

To my knowledge, Knockum Hill's schedule is the same as it was back in June: Friday 9am to 7pm, and Saturday 9am to 3pm. I don't know whether the place is seasonal or not, though.

I had intended to call. My biggest problem is I will be just passing through on a long journey and would have a hard time pinning down when I'd be there.

When they reopened this summer after their fire, I was one of the very first customers.  They have never disappointed me.  It's about a 100-mile drive for me (one way) but that giant pork chop is always worth it.

Well, this has now come to pass, though there were only about 10 of us in attendance.  Everything reported previously about that chop is still true, except that the price of the plate is now up to $14.50 (and is still a steal).  I expect that there will be visual evidence in the Nashville "Glee Club" thread.  Suffice it to say that this has to be seen to truly be appreciated!

It was an interesting stop. The owner and his workers were very cooperative and friendly. The Chop is indeed 'GIANT'--think in terms of a 4 rib (bone-in) Pork Rib Roast, and you have a better descriptor. Ours had a nice crusty exterior, and very moist and juicy/tender interior. Flavor was good. I like my BBQ Pork to be fairly 'Smokey' and this was pretty mild, so I would rate it a 6 or maybe a 7 on the Mayor's 10 scale.  The sides were a mixed batch. I agree the BBBQ Beans were basic canned beans with a strong shot of brown sugar added. The potato salad was Supermarket deli-style...we didn't try anything else.
  The Knock'em Hill BBQ, is unique. If we were traveling up or down I24 for some reason, or visiting someone at Ft Campbell, KY, we might choose to stop again. But in reality, this was a one time visit to test a BBQ oddity.

I've tried all their sides.  Not a one of them is worth writing about.  The pork chop, the ribs, and the barbecue is all you want.  Indeed, I don't know why they even bother with the sides.

I went to Knockum Hill in Herndon, Kentucky two days ago on Friday.  It was closed.  I wondered why, since they are only open on Friday and Saturday morning.  On Sunday morning I was told why.  Oscar Hill, the owner, had died that morning in a car accident.
 
Since it always seemed to me that Knockum Hill was sort a glorified hobby, I guess that means the end of the restaurant.  It's too early to know what will happen to its future, but that's my guess.

Louis, Thanks for sharing the news about the unfortunate death of Mr. Hill. There was a story on Channel 5 news (Nashville) Friday evening about the accident. They said it happened in Hopkinsville at 5am Fri. morning, when the van he was driving ran off the road, hit a culvert, and burst into flames. As you said, it was pretty much a one man operation so it may never reopen, I'm sorry to say. Great BBQ in a very out of the way location. Hard to find but worth the effort. Rest in Peace Mr. Hill.

I'm sorry to hear about the tragic death of Mr. Hill. 
I did have the opportunity to visit Knockum Hill on the Nashville Glee Club tour 4 and a half years ago.

Ever since Knockum Hill Bar-B-Q owner, Oscar Hill, died last July, I've been asked if I have ever heard anything of it opening again.  I had not . . . until today.
 
It looks, though, that the giant pork chop is not going to be on the menu, but everything else will be.  Also, I didn't know that Jay Leno had stopped by there!

Legend has it that Knockum Hill in South Christian got its name in the early 20th century when drunk patrons of a nearby stagecoach stop would fight to see who could send who tumbling down the hill. Like the wasted winners of those bygone days, Knockum Hill Bar B Que has taken a few punches, but remains standing.
 
Despite some tragic setbacks in recent years, the heavyweight barbecue joint is slated to open again in the coming weeks.
 
Opened in 1978, the original building burned Feb. 25, 2010, after a fire started while owner William “Oscar” Hill was cooking pork. Firefighters from four area departments unsuccessfully battled the blaze, once running out of water and having to send trucks for more. Interviewed while his livelihood burned around him, Hill, who bought the business from his brother-in-law Will Hargrove in 1997, vowed to rebuild.
 
“We’ll build it back,” he said then. “We’ll make it.”
 
A little more than three months later, while continuing to run a wholesale business that supplied barbecue to local grocers, Hill hung up what was left of his restaurant’s memorabilia and proudly unveiled a new “state-of-the-art” facility.
 
That first weekend of his reopening, Hill said visitors wore out his gravel driveway. Local patrons aside, the business had always attracted Fort Campbell soldiers en masse and others from across the country.
 
“Oftentimes it was custom for helicopter pilots from Fort Campbell to land in the field across the road from the restaurant and go over and have barbecue,” said Christian County Historian William T. Turner. “Of course Knockum Hill had a wide span of customers. People would come from long distances to get Knockum Hill barbecue, it was considered just top-notch. That was a great attraction. For years, the historical society had its annual barbecue there in May. We would meet and have our barbecue dinner and a meeting in the pavilion next to the building and fortunately the pavilion, though slightly damaged, wasn’t lost in the fire and continues as an original landmark of the place.”
 
The iconic restaurant had taken a punch and come out the other side. All was well.
 
Hill died July 8. A van he was driving ran off the road, hit a culvert and caught fire on LaFayette Road near Lamb Funeral Home. He was 79. A private memorial service was hosted at the restaurant. It has sat empty ever since. Hill’s wife, Sue, decided she would not open the business back up. It looked like the punch that would be the end of Knockum Hill Bar B Que.
Instead, thanks to 54-year-old Billy Campbell Jr., an electrician and former firefighter, the business will reopen as early as March 31. Campbell is familiar with the business and has known Hill and Hargrove since he was a child.
 
“I met Mr. Oscar 30 years ago,” he said. “I grew up with Will. I spent my first night at Will’s house when they lived on Princeton Road, I was probably eight years old.”
 
He believes the familiarity is a reason why Hill’s family, including Hargrove, felt comfortable selling him the business.
 
“He knows my work ethic,” said Campbell, who said he downsized his work as a master electrician on post so he could focus on the business.
 
Campbell is a man who professes that he can cook anything — except desserts — and says he feels no pressure in living up to the Knockum Hill name.
 
“Good barbecue is gonna sell itself,” he said. “Only way you can fail in here … is if you want to fail. That’s the way I look at it.”
 
But while Campbell can cook it all, that doesn’t mean he’s coming in to mix up the restaurant’s classic menu. Everything that can be the same, will be, he said. The only things changing are the phone number — the new number becomes active Monday and is 270-271-2262 — and the furniture in the dining room. The old furniture was donated by Hill’s widow to a nearby church.
Campbell is keeping the menu the same, minus a thick pork chop, keeping the same recipes, same suppliers, bringing back old employees and keeping the same hours, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays with the dining room closing at 6:30 p.m. and carry-out available until 7 p.m. On Saturdays, the business is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the restaurant closing at 2:30 p.m.
 
“It’s still a five-day a week job,” he said. “You’re hauling slabs on Monday, you’re cleaning pits on Tuesday. You’re making burgoo Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday you go home and rest and Thursday you get back over here and fire up the pits to get the meat on. You see the sign, we’re open from Friday to Saturday, no, that’s not the way it works, we just sell Friday and Saturday.”
 
He will also maintain the way the business has always cooked and kept its meat. He promises his barbecue will never be microwaved, refrigerated or reheated.
 
“This barbecue you get out of this establishment, always has and always will be, comes off that pit at 5 o’clock in the morning, goes into the pans and it’s served,” he said.
 
He said some barbecue businesses will reheat their meat in a microwave the next day or freeze it to be served later. He will maintain his practices even if it means losing product.
 
“Chickens get thrown away daily. If you have seven chickens left, if you can’t give them away, you can’t sell them.”
 
Campbell has seen first-hand the sort of patronage those practices brought the business before Hill died. Jay Leno visited once, and Campbell used to bring potential clients and customers from Fort Campbell to eat there.
 
“Knockum Hill was Knockum Hill,” he said. “We took it for granted. People come from a long way, partner, I sat here Saturday cleaning and a couple from Chattanooga, Tennessee, came by. They’d been coming here … and heard it had reopened. They thought we were open.”
 
Campbell said his fellow firefighters always told him he needed to open a restaurant after he’d cook for them. Knockum Hill sitting empty provided him with the perfect opportunity close to home to do something he’d always wanted to do.
 
“I’ve been twisting wires since I was 19. I worked at the fire station for 23 years and retired out, twisted wires every day I was off. I’m just ready to do something a little different,” he said. “We’re gonna do this, we’re gonna make this happen.”
