I remember a roadtrip with the family through the south circa 1975 and eating at both "Burger Queen" and "Dairy King." I always wondered if they were still around.
It is amazing what you can find on the internet. I stumbled upon this thread while searching for "Burger Queen" and got a big kick out of reading the posts.
I lived in Sarasota County, Florida from 1968-93. Several years after we moved to Venice in '68, they constructed a Burger Queen at the northeast corner of Milan Ave & Tamiami Trail (Business US 41). There had been a Pure gas station on this corner previously. I do not recall exactly when th BQ opened but I want to say 1970 or '71. I know that it was before the Venice McDonald's was built and that was 1972.
Something reminded me of the chain the other day which prompted me to start searching. I stumbled upon this:

I do not recall a BQ in Sarasota at all. The 1600 block of S. Tamiami Trail would have been in the vicinity of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. This photo was taken in 1959, nearly ten years before we moved to Venice (about six months before I was born). Looks like a drive-in theater screen in the background. I definitely do not know of a drive-in theater having been in that area. The old Trail Drive-in was near the airport and there was another drive-in at US 41 and Stickney Point Road, as I understand (on the site of Gulf Gate Mall - before my time).
Does anybody out there recall this old BQ in Sarasota?
And I also remember - vaguely - the obnoxious Queenie Bee TV commercials.
