Just noticed someone brought this thread back from the dead, just in time for halloween
Help! Has anyone rigged one of the whole house standby generators to their trailer or mobil kitchen ? I need about 10 kw to run this trailer. I want to run on propane. I dont want to haul gas around. I have 2 100lb propane tanks on the front of my trailer. I'm looking at the Generac and the Kohler. this trailer has a 100 amp breaker box( service) installed. What I dont want to do is buy this and A) it does not work or B) it works but not for long... The rv type generators are more expensive and I would like to save $$ if I can. Anybody ??
I looked at propane generators for my bus, a 10-12 kw propane genset uses a lot of propane, (a 10kw uses about 150k btu under load.) I ended up going with a diesel, because thats what my motive power on the bus is.
I don't think the whole house standby gensets are built as well as commercial power generation in that they are intended for intermittent use.
The RV gensets are built well and some are very quiet. Noise will really be a factor. You can custom engineer most anything but it's spendy. As the fellow before said, 1800 rpm are quieter and much more durable on the whole, and water cooled gensets tend to be quieter and more durable as well.
There are a number of RV dismantlers who sometimes have pretty decent prices on low hour rv units.
