RE: School Boy sandwich
Hi, beret, I sure wasn't your elementary school cook back in 1968, but I did do that job in Moline, Il, at a Catholic middle school in the early 1990's. We cooked giant "loaves" of 60% lean Government ground beef...a free commodity we gratefully received. We scrambled the meat, drained the plentiful grease and seasoned with lots of galic powder, seasoning salt and pepper. Oh, lots of reconstituted dried onion, too. Scooped (with an ice cream scooper) onto a bun. Really, the kids loved it. Even we cooks were happy with it. There wasn't any particular spice that made it good; it was just something the kids knew would be yummy, and served with French fries, which was not so commom then.
Otherwise, the Loose Meat sandwiches are truly a wonderful recipe find. I hope you find the taste you remember! That's such a treat.
