Re:What is your favorite holiday experience of the past or present ?
I came from a very economicly(sp) strapped family, we were broke all the time, we couldn't afford much, but Christmas WAS special. Dad would go out after we kids were all in bed and "find" a Christmas tree, then Mom and Dad would decorate the tree. As we thought at that time, it was Santa the 'brought the tree.' Actually, as I found out much later in life, Dad would find a lot that was closed, then talk someone out of a tree. Some were pretty bad, but some were very pretty. And the gifts they somehow managed to get us kids were terrific, some purchased used, some refurbished, and some (not many) new.
We were allowed to open ONE present before Mass. Then after Mass we would go to each of the Grandparents homes, exchange gifts, food, and hugs, then off to the 'other' Grandparents, and FINALLY home, usually about 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon to open our own gifts.
Mom and Dad are both gone now, but I still have some pretty good memories of times past.
