Read the post I did a few weeks ago on the restoration of a real Googie-era diner
in Downey by Bob's Big Boy. You'll find that things are looking up---a bit, at least.
Not far away from me, on Pacific Coast Highway with it's back to Huntington Harbor, is Don The Beachcomber
. The building was originally Sam's Seafood, built back in the 50's and most of the interior including the Tiki Lounge has been maintained with the original look. I've been there many times and it's a good place. I even went to a Hawaiian Poke Festival there----that was a lot of fun, with Hawaiian music, 50 different restaurants competing for best Poke and great Mai Tais.
For me, what I miss are the Hungarian restaurants in L.A. I don't know how the rest of the country, but Hungarian restaurants have all but disappeared. I remember going to the Budapest and Hortobagy years ago and they were great. Both long gone now. Well, at least I get my dose of Hungarian food everytime I meet Mr. and Mrs. Chips up in Albany, OR to go to Novaks. Great Hungarian food in the middle of Oregon---who would have thought!
