I absolutely gorged on chestnuts when I was a kid growing up in Knox County Kentucky. My grandma had a flourishing tree in her sideyard and my sister and I would feast on them during their season. Now, Kentucky Forest Management is working to resurrect the population of trees.

We had 4 trees in the side yard when I was growing up. I loved to eat them, but they are a pain. Not only are they hard to get out of the husk, but the burr's are a real drag to rake before mowing the grass. We recently cut the trees down since we have all grown and moved out.
It was kind of ´╗┐´╗┐´╗┐fascinating to watch deer come into the yard and bury their noses into those burrs to get to the nuts. Didnt seem to bother them.

One of the marks of rural masculinity when I was a kid was whether or not you could bust through the burr with the heel of your foot. The rough and tumble country kids who went barefoot nearly year round could break right through. The shoe clad amongst us didn't have it so easy.
Hope you saved all that good wood for your smoker.

There is a Chestnut tree down our road, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church's front yard. Vietnamese Restauranters show up every year now, and get them all!
