When I visit one of our great New Jersey classic diners, my usual is a great Reuben sandwich. Found this article which talks about how to make it right. What do you Reuben lovers think? Any variations?

I love the Manny's experience, but unless you equate quantity with quality I'd be hard pressed to say they make one of the best Reubens I've ever had.
 
There used to be an excellent German restaurant here in Chicago called the German American Tap, known to it's regulars simply as the "G & A".  Their Reuben had the proper balance of ingredients mentioned in the article, and may heve been the best I've ever tasted.  Unfortunately, urban "improvement" spelled the end of the G & A.
 
The Reuben is one of my favorite sandwiches, but for the life of me, I can't name another really exceptional one or where it came from.

Since McBob's and Benji's in Milwaukee are both known for corned beef, I wonder if reubens are on the menus as well.

Coming from a German/Czech family, reubens were on the table a lot.  It is hands down my favorite sandwich.  That being said, I always get it without dressing.  Don't like it, the sandwich doesn't need it.  I do give it a good spread of an assertive brown mustard though.

Love Reubens! I had a really good one a couple of weeks ago at Hal's Deli in Ithaca, NY.http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/1263/hals-deli  I can also get a pretty good one a lot closer to home at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, VA.http://www.jimmystavern.com/
Generally my biggest complaint with Reubens , especially from chain restaurants ( Chili's, TGI Fridays, etc) is that they are too soggy, with no crunch to the bread after grilling and too much dressing.

That, and I want to really taste the rye.  Sometimes I get one where the bread is brown, but if I closed my eyes I'd think it was just white bread.

McBob's and Benji's both serve Reubens.  I'm pretty sure I've had McBob's version, although I don't remember it as being anything special, above and beyond their excellent regular Corned Beef sandwich.  I've only been to Benji's once and can't remember what I had.  If it was the Reuben, it was nothing that left a lasting impression.

Oh yeah, I've learned to ask if it's opened faced. Don't want that. As a matter of fact, I don't like opened faced sandwiches of any kind!!!

One of the best reubens I ever had, and this is absolutely no joke... I was trapped in a lesbian bar around noon one St. Patrick's day because there was an active shooter on the next block (he'd killed a family member and had blockaded himself in the house, eventually ended up shooting it out with the police and lost), and the police herded anyone on the sidewalk into the bar and wouldn't let anyone leave for a couple hours.
Made the best of the situation as long as I wasn't able to leave... cold beer, friendly atmosphere, and they made their own corned beef that day. Piled high on marble rye, grilled just right (I think they used garlic butter on the bread), I got another to take with me when it was clear to leave.

Great story. Can't get a good Reuben here in Delaware, possibly because we don't get good corn beef.

I'm not a huge fan of Reubens, but Pal's Cabin had a Reuben sandwich called The Redwood, which was well regarded.  I believe you can still buy it at Fairchild's in Roseland, NJ.

I love a good Reuben, and there are plenty in the Indianapolis area. This one was very good but not memorable. Not even  sure they used rye bread. Potato salad may have been the best ever. Courthouse Grounds Coffee Shop in Danville, Indiana.

I've never been a Reuben fan. I love a good corned beef sandwich. And I love a combination corned beef and pastrami. I especially love a corned beef and pastrami with Swiss cheese. I really like sauerkraut, too. But I do not like it on a corned beef sandwich. What I dislike most about a Reuben is the grilling of the bread.

Make the Corned beef, Pastrami, make the dressing mustard. I squeeze most of the liquid out of the kraut and heat it up while in the pan with the pastrami. A good mustard is a must, maybe thats why they call it MUSTard. Good rye bread and swiss cheese. After grilling try to keep the sandwich from laying flat on the plate. It will get soggy on the bottom you can also lay it on a paper towel to keep the bottom of the sandwich crispy.......OK, it's not a Reuben but it's dam good!!!!!!!!

One year, because I managed to find some fantastic corned beef, but more importantly, some exceptional marbled rye bread, I made Reuben sandwiches for our Christmas Eve dinner - - - it has become a tradition in our family, and I make a pretty good one...
 
I don't like the sweetness of Russian or Thous. Isl. Dressings, but I use a mixture of mayo and brown spicy or brown horseradish mustard on both the top and bottom slices of bread...  I 'steam' the thin sliced beef or pastrami in the microwave (on a plate with a damp paper towel on top) for about 30 seconds to heat it through...  I don't pile so much meat on the sandwich to overpower the other ingredients, but it should be a healthy pile....  I drain the kraut and heat it a bit, as well....  I have found that I like baby swiss cheese the best, but have used a combo of swiss and Havarti with some success....  I use a flat griddle and start by putting the buttered slices of bread on the grill and spread them with the must/mayo and put the meat and kraut on one slice and the cheese on the other....  The ingredients are already heated, so I watch for the cheese to start softening and melting then flip that onto the meat half....  A few minutes of grilling then a quick flip to continue the 'melt' and onto a plate...  I find that the bread doesn't get soggy and the melty mixture is perfect....  A quick diagonal slice and a couple of crispy kosher dills and a pilsner glass of good brew and I am a happy camper..... 
 
And now, on Good Friday, for pete's sake, I am craving a Reuben....  Sigh......

The reuben I had at McBob's  here in Milwaukee recently was fantastic. No thousand island, just good course ground brown mustard. Not soggy at all, all the flavors worked wonderfully together.

At Hot Dog University, we teach our students to prepare a Reuben slider. Instead of grilling rye bread, the Reuben is served on a steamed poppy seed bun. The light airy bun serves the same purpose as the rye bread, however, it's lightness, being not as dense, allows one to taste all the ingredients in the sandwich, instead of a mouthful of overpowering thick grilled rye. Pastrami and Rachael sliders are even better. Try it, you'll like it!

I have never had a reuben at Zingerman's, even though I live only 70 miles away.
 
Pastrami Joe's Deli, 105 North Jefferson Street, Marshall, Michigan, still has the best reubens that I have eaten.  When it first opened, I had one of their reubens.  While I know that they also serve other sandwiches, I have never had anything but a reuben there.  www.pastramijoes.com
 
The Ordinary, now known as the Out Of The Ordinary Restaurant, 61 South Van Buren Street, Nashville, Indiana had excellent reubens.  I have not eaten there since the name change a couple of years ago, but I hear that the reubens are now open face.  www.outoftheo.com

Current fave is found at a Deli in a gas station in Waukesha. Sisters Deli, housed in the Expo Citgo on Pewaukee Rd. Just around the corner from the Waukesha County Courthouse.
 
Good bread, meat and cheese and as much or as little dressing as you want. Some joints want to feature a giant sandwich, 1 pound of meat! 1/2 pound of cheese! Not here, just a well balanced Reuben made with quality stuff.
 
Soups and chili are available during the colder months. Some are scratch made, some are not. Salads are available as well.
 
Sisters Deli is my fave lunch spot.

Soggy is the biggest issue for me with a Reuben. You have to flip it immediately when it comes to the table so it doesn't steam the bread wet.

For me, a Reuben will always have Thousand Island dressing....not Russian.  Archie Moore's in New Haven makes a pretty good one when they have it as a special and Katz's Deli in NYC.  When the corned beef isn't made fresh, I prefer using thin sliced deli pastrami in its place, fried on a griddle. 
 
In CT we have a variation on the Reuben called the Pastrami Nightmare which is pastrami, grilled onions, tomato, swiss, and mustard on rye or as a grinder. It's delicious.  Not sure if it's found anywhere else.

In New Haven that used to be called a Pastrami Special. I'd always get mine without the tomato.

Here's the Pastrami Nightmare from Ray and Mike's in Hamden, CT.  A slightly different take on most Nightmares, this version adds grilled peppers and pepperjack cheese along with the standard grilled onion, tomato, spicy brown mustard, and pastrami.  I prefer the versions I've had with swiss and no peppers, but this was very very good.
