That is almost word-for-word what a friend of mine said!

I've not seen a commercial yet, but I really kind of want to. Not badly enough to search YouTube (where I'm sure I'll find one), but almost enough to actually pay attention when someone turns the TV on in my house.

Since CK's link says the video is unavailable, it left me curious. I wondered about the new Colonel. I found a link to a news article, and that news article has links to three commercials. I listened to all three. The laugh/chuckle is creepy.  Couldn't they have found someone better?
I remember seeing the original Colonel riding in a parade in a convertible many years ago, when I was in college.

It's really sad they have so little respect for him as the founder.  He would be very disappointed to know what they've done to his original food concept ( he was fanatic about his process and quality ), now to see what they've done with this series of demeaning commercials is just another indication they don't give a $$it about the legacy of the company and the founder.  Hope more people speak out about this, I'm not a Facebook person but perhaps a link to a comment page on social media would get the word back to those idiots at KFC.
Sad indeed.

CEO loves the negative publicity...., apparently negative publicity is better than none at all.
So its best to hit them where it hurts, don't eat the crap...have not been to one in years so I guess I'm doing my part.

It goes beyond the fake colonel. The hayseeds arrayed around him are a northern ad agency's stereotype of anyone from the south. Is YUM still HQ'd in Louisville?

Shame. Shame. Shame.

So hit em where it hurts, on the income side, if KFC laughs and says let em complain they love the negative publicity, then stop buying from them. Start a boycott against them, not hard in these days of instant response from millions on social media.

Funny, but I agree that the Colonel knew he sold out, and laughed all the way to the bank, but he was a fast-food pioneer, and must have realized too late that he unknowingly sold his soul with his business.
Had he stayed in control and MAINTAINED control, the wonderful recipe with which he started, and his name,  would probably be spoken with the same reverence we attach to other RF icons.
But every post in this thread is spot on.....
In life he was forced to make endless commercials and personal appearances while he watched his baby violated over and over again in the name of profit...
And in death, the worst kind of indignation....turned into a comic-book fool, awkwardly trying to make contact with a generation that could care less...
At his gravesite, I wonder if one can actually feel the earth vibrate from the constant spinning.....
But his kids and grandkids must be well-provided for...and that counts a lot.....just not for us.

The CEO's right...if 20% hate the new ad campaign then 80% don't.

I've only seen a couple of the commercials but find them amusing in an oddball way...whatever Darrell Hammond brought to his Bill Clinton impersonation seems to carrying over to some extent.

Same here, I find them mildly amusing.  My kids on the other hand (ages 6 to 16) don't get them at all.

Re: the new colonel sanders 2015/06/25 12:15:45 (permalink)
The true KFC story is fascinating, here is a nice summary of it - which includes Col. Sanders relationship to the business after he sold it for $2,000,000 in 1964 to a group headed by a very young John Y. Brown.

Later, a legend grew that Brown had 'seduced' the sale by stacking $2MM in 20's on table, telling Sanders to "Take it or leave it."  It didn't happen that way, but Sanders would later make T.V. appearances with two million in cash as a 'prop'.  The Colonel was a most willing, highly paid "P.R." guy.

(BTW: Mentioned in the story is something I remember: seeing the Col. stump the panel on "What's My Line"; he was unknown then and wasn't a "Mystery Guest"!).

At the time he sold, Sanders had been licensing the name, his likeness, and the recipe for shockingly little.  I remember two places from the early 1960's that were licensee's:  The Garden Gate Restaurant on 422 between Butler and New Castle, PA and Morgan's Restaurants in New Castle and Youngstown, OH.  The Garden Gate was my favorite because it had an AYCE buffet that featured KFC!  The Garden Gate and Morgan's Restaurants have since closed, but Morgan Foods of Youngstown is still an active franchisee of Yum Brands.

I met Sanders by chance in 1969 at The University Cafeteria in Charlottesville and initiated a brief conversation with him.  He was 'in uniform' and was very affable and approachable.  He even made a joke about how great life was "getting paid to play himself".

So, from my chance encounter and his 'business story' I think he would approve of the "New Colonel" as long as:

  • He is depicted more or less respectfully.
  • His estate gets paid the 'big bucks!

So it appears he was a much more willing sell-out than legend claims.....The antithesis of "sacrifice to protect the purity of the product", that Roadfooders seek so diligently and respect so highly.
Thanks for clearing that up, Jim
...But one thing from the article...
It indicates KFC started out pressure frying chicken.....Does anyone know if they still do?

Sorry, but I like the Chicken in a Bucket, Chicken in the Beans commercial.  I like catchy, quirky tunes in commercials because they invade my space so repeatedly.

BUT...  I just had to Google it to see if it was a KFC commercial.  It might have been catchy but it didn't sell their product which should be the intent.

I also like Darrell Hammond so he doesn't annoy me.

The commercials don't bother me in the least.  If anything, they make me nostalgic for when the real Colonel Sanders was alive and doing ads.

And I still laugh that my Japanese houseguest, who was here for the holidays, was so surprised to learn that Americans don't eat KFC on Christmas.

A lesson that has been learned many times, notably in recent years by Taco Bell: It doesn't matter if people like your commercial; all that matters is if people buy your product.

They are pretty creepy, but they don't make me shake my head as much as the animated dancing, jive-talking depiction of the Colonel back in the late 1990s.  That was disgraceful. Luckily he didn't last long.

Of course, they all pale in comparison to the "Spongmonkey" commercials Quiznos had running back in the day: "We love the subs! 'Cuz they are good to us. The Quiznos subs. They are tasty, they are crunchy, they are warm because they toast them. They got a pepper bar!"

Let Colonel Sanders rest in peace. The KFC powers that be are already letting his original recipe rest in peace, why not him. Horrible chain. This ad proves they have no taste, just like their chicken!!!!!!!
