Fourth of July Foods
My plans for the holiday weekend have me going from DC to Massachusetts to visit family. I’ll be driving so the possibilities for good eats enroute and on the return trip are limitless.
Were I staying home, I’d be just as happy, foodwise that is. The 4th of July to me is a day of feasting. While grilled meats are always featured prominently in the day’s menu, the one item I look forward to preparing the most is Boston baked beans. My recipe is a slapdash affair that takes a little bit each from cookbooks by Durgin-Park, the Frugal Gourmet, and Yankee magazine. Takes 4-5 hours in all, not including soaking the beans overnight, and I use a special bean pot made by a company in Ohio that I drag out every year just for the occasion.
Anyone else have special dishes or special meals they associate with the 4th?
