a donut epiphany-update 2/25/08

Just wanted to include a picture of the Donut Pub here. Didn't have time to stop in on this trip, but next update will actually have pictures of real donuts!!

I didn't grow up with a particular love for donuts. We had a couple of good donut places in my hometown (The Home Bakery, Roman Pastry and Hemstrought's Bakery in Utica, NY). I thought they were pretty good, but I was never "moved" by them. This morning I got out of work and walked to The Donut Pub at 203 W. 14th St. at 7th Ave in NYC. I arrived there around 8am and picked up a toasted coconut and a sugar twist to go. The total was $1.98. They were both raised (yeast) donuts and I really am a yeast donut man through and through. I love a cake donut now and again, but they'll never hold that special place a yeast one does.
I could feel that the bag was warm, like the last embers of a fire giving off that nice glow and when I pulled out the toasted coconut donut, it was warm and had a great slightly chewy pull to it. LIke eating a warm, sweet pillow of yeasty goodness, it made me very happy and the coconut had a nice presence. The sugar twist just pulled apart and and the I could hear the sweet granules explode as I joyously ate them.
I did try a cinnamon sugar cake donut the other day and it had a great crispy crunch to it that I've often heard used to describe many of the donuts in the Portland, OR area. Plus, the Donut Pub is open 24 hrs. However, the real magic is getting them while they're still warm. They're great any time of day or night, but it's a whole different plane of donut existence when you bite into one that was just made.
