Gumbo in Long Beach, California

I heard recently that there was a place in Long Beach where I could get authentic gumbo.
Just so happened that I was going to be in Long Beach so I had to try it out.
What a find for this gumbo loving person!

Sal's Gumbo Shack
6148 Long Beach Boulevard
I knew that I was going to order the gumbo before arriving there.
I was not disappointed!

It was made with a dark roux and was loaded with shrimp, crab, andouille and chicken.  The flavor was better than many I had in New Orleans.  This was the real deal and I think I was uttering YUM out loud with every spoonful.
It was so good that I bought a quart to go.  My mother also loves gumbo so I knew what she was going to have for dinner before she did.
Sharon ordered the catfish plate which she really enjoyed.  There aren't many places in the Los Angeles area where you can get good catfish or catfish at all.

We had to wait a bit for the catfish because it was battered and fried to order.
She smiled with every bite.
I thought it odd that the filets still had the skin on them, but what do I know?  Sharon didn't seem to mind.
Sal's is very simple inside with hints of New Orleans.

When you enter you are greeted by the nicest woman (I didn't ask her name) and she takes your order at the counter.
When we got the food, she asked if we'd like to try her home made habanero hot sauce.  Of course!

Being that we also ordered a Balinese tamale because we'd never heard of a Balinese tamale I finished the container of hot sauce.

It was the perfect vehicle for the habanero sauce.  Filled with chicken it was quite good.  The masa was a little soft for my taste but it was still quite good.
I need to be back in Long Beach in three weeks.  I also need another bowl of Sal's gumbo.
Oh, I'll also need another quart to go for my own further enjoyment.
